Greater Noida: Abhay Kumar, the builder and owner of MZ Wishtown, has been arrested in connection with the death of software engineer Yuvraj Mehta. The arrest was carried out by Knowledge Park police.
The case of the software engineer who drowned in the basement of an under-construction mall in Sector-150, under the Knowledge Park police station area of Greater Noida, has forced the authorities and local residents into a tizzy. On Monday evening, the Noida Authority took major action against the responsible officers and employees.
In a late-night press release, the Noida Authority stated that show-cause notices have been issued to the concerned officers and employees responsible for traffic-related work in and around the Sector-150 area. Furthermore, the services of Junior Engineer Naveen Kumar, posted in the Noida Traffic Cell department, have been terminated with immediate effect.
The Authority's CEO, Lokesh M, has directed the concerned departments to submit a detailed report regarding the allocation and construction work of Lotus Builder in this matter. He also clarified that negligence of safety standards at construction sites will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The CEO has directed all departments to re-inspect the ongoing construction projects in their respective areas to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. The authority says that strict action against the culprits will continue.
It may be recalled that after a 27-year-old software engineer died when his car fell into a water-filled pit at a construction site in Sector-150 of Greater Noida, the Noida Authority has sacked a junior engineer and issued show-cause notices to other officials responsible for traffic-related work in the area.
In an official statement on Sunday night, the Authority said that its Chief Executive Officer, Lokesh M, has ordered strict action in the matter and directed the immediate termination of Junior Engineer Naveen Kumar of the Noida Traffic Cell.
In addition, show-cause notices have also been issued to other concerned officers and employees responsible for traffic management in and around Sector-150.
The statement said that the CEO has sought a detailed report from the concerned departments regarding the allocation and construction activities of the developer Lotus and has directed a review of the safety arrangements at the site. Stating that negligence of safety regulations at construction sites will not be tolerated, the authorities said that all departments have been directed to re-inspect safety measures at ongoing construction projects in their respective areas to prevent such incidents from recurring.
This action comes after the death of software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park Society. His car fell into a more than 20-foot-deep, water-filled pit dug for the basement of an under-construction building in Sector 150 early Saturday morning. Allegations of negligence and delays in rescue efforts have surfaced following the accident.
Police said that Mehta, who worked for a company in Gurugram, was returning home from work amidst dense fog when the accident occurred. His body was recovered after a search operation conducted by teams from the fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police.
A witness, a delivery agent, claimed that there was a delay in rescue efforts and suggested that Mehta could have been saved if action had been taken more quickly. Residents staged a protest, alleging inadequate barricading and a lack of reflectors at the accident site.
Police have registered an FIR against two real estate developers based on a complaint from the victim's family, while denying any negligence in the rescue operation. Following the protests, the Noida Authority has installed barricades at the site.
